It takes a big bass player like Bill "Buddha" Dickens to handle an axe like the Conklin GTBD-7 Bass Guitar with its full seven strings to range over. Constructed with a maple and purpleheart thru-body neck and swamp ash wings topped with curly maple. Gold hardware tricks it out. The GTBD-7 electric bass has totally custom-made Bartolini Bill Dickens pickups and custom electronics, including a 3-position parametric preset rotary switch and mid-frequency selector.

Woooo!!! The Conklin GTBD-7 is a great way to get started exploring extedned range bass guitar. It's a beast to be sure; the guys in my band refer to it as 'the Enterprise'. The top horn comes up far enough to negate the dive that such a wide neck and large headstock would create, and it's suprisingly comfy for such a large instrument. The neck is flat as a pancake, and there's no problem setting the action as low as you need it to be with no buzz (Ease of fretting is a requirement if you're just getting into necks as wide as the GTBD7). IMHO you *will* absolutely need a compressor to get the most out of this thing, though - the disparity in gain structure between the low B and the high F is very significant, even if you manually adjust your attack, adjust pickup height, etc. I play mine theough a set of patches in my PODxtLive, and this thing can sound like a P-Bass, a jazz, a Bongo (Think Myung type proggie tone), or anything from Col. Bruce to Willis to Rush. The only shortcoming I've discovered is the string spacing doesn't seem to let me get my slap/funk on, but I like a 4 for that stuff anyway (Bootsy / Grahm / Jamerson / Wooo!).
This is a great axe. It's very well put together, seams are very, very tight, hardware is solid and high quality, bridge is a huge chunk o' metal, and the onboard sounds great (Did I mention you'll want a compressor?) - it's a great axe, resale is good, what are you waiting for???
